When Elizabeth (my older daughter) was about 4, I had managed to get all the cats to come in off the screened porch and I told her “Don’t let the cats back out, it’s cold out there.”
It was an evening late in the fall and it was going to get cold that night. I wanted to keep the cats in so I could go to bed as soon as she was asleep. I went to clean up something in the kitchen and when I turned back around, there she was, letting the last cat out again.
I exclaimed “Elizabeth! I told you not to let the cats out! It’s cold out there!”
And she looked at me with this grave, serious expression and said “But Mom, they’re wearing coats.” and she thought for a second and added “Fur coats, at that.”
